2) What are the basic steps involved in getting my real estate license?

  • Choose Kaplan Professional Schools to get the salesperson pre-licensing coursework.
  • Complete Courses and obtain certificates by passing a final exam for each course that will be submitted to TREC.
  • Submit Evaluation of Education form to TREC. All education documents, including copies of college transcripts and copies of real estate school certificates must be sent to TREC. The Request for Evaluation of Education Documents form can be downloaded at www.trec.state.tx.us. From the submission date of education documents to TREC, it will take approximately six weeks to obtain the license.
  • Submit the completed salesperson application to TREC after students have received the education approval from TREC. Applications can be completed online or printed from the TREC website.
  • Schedule the license examination with PSI after receiving the Candidate Information Brochure (CIB) from TREC. Applicants have six months from the date the application was filed to pass the examination. PSI: 1-800-733-9267
  • Get Fingerprinted. Anyone applying for a broker or salesperson license after January 1, 2008, must get fingerprinted in connection with the application. Currently, there are 70 locations statewide where electronic fingerprints can be taken. Visit http://www.trec.state.tx.us for more information.
  • Take Exam Prep Course. Take the two day live or online pre-recorded version. We recommend taking the exam prep two days to a week before taking the salesperson or broker licensing exam.
  • Take the State Exam. Once someone passes the exam, the results are sent electronically to TREC, and an active license will be sent directly to the sponsoring broker.
